WRITE
LAUREN A LETTER!
One of the hardest
things about being in prison is being cut off from friends and family.
Take a moment to write Lauren a letter and ease a bit of the loneliness
of prison life. Even if it's only a short note or a postcard, whenever
Lauren crosses your mind, be sure to drop her a line and let her know.
Even these small messages help to remind prisoners of the large number
of supporters they have on the outside, and the great efforts for the
animals so many others continue to take across the globe.

What should I
write about?
When writing to
a prisoner for the first time, many people are unsure what to write
about. Mostly they are afraid that their letter will be boring. But
your letter doesn't need to be a novel or approximate an adventure story.
Rather, a simple letter sharing who you are, what you are up to, and
any other thoughts or ideas you'd like to share will suffice. Even the
simple experience of receiving a letter - regardless of how profound
or exciting its contents - is pleasant for those cut off from their
friends and family.
A few small guidelines/suggestions:
- Do not discuss
the specifics of the case. All of the SHAC 7 defendants are appealing
their convictions and, as such, they all still retain their Fifth Amendment
rights to protect them in the event they are granted a new trial.
- Tell Lauren about
the HLS campaign and news about other animal rights campaigns! Send
her newsletters, web print outs and news articles. The SHAC 7 defendants
will not have access to the web while they are incarcerated, and the
most comforting thing for any political prisoner to hear is that their
great work is being carried on while they are temporarily unable to
do so themselves. (note: newspaper clippings are not permitted, though
you may photocopy them or print them from the internet)

SEND LAUREN A
BOOK!
There is very little
to do in prison, and reading tends to be one of the best ways to pass
the time and stave off boredom. Prisoners will often read more books
than any one of us with lives full of activism, jobs, and social activities
could imagine.
How to send Lauren
a book:
You may send paperbacks
directly through the mail. However, when sending a paperback book (or books) to Lauren you need to clearly mark on the outside of the package, "Approved by B.O.P." and list the contents of the package (i.e. 1 paperback book). Otherwise Lauren may not receive books that are sent to her directly. Hardcovers must be sent from the distributor
(amazon.com, AKpress.org,
etc.) or directly from the store when you purchase a book.
What else can
I send?
Federal prisoners
are permitted to receive a very small variety of items from "the
outside". Inmates are allowed to receive an unlimited number of
cards, letters, and photographs (but no Polaroids) from anyone. They
may also receive an unlimited number of magazines and periodicals, but
these must come directly from the publisher (i.e. by way of a subscription
directly to the prisoner); magazines and periodicals sent from anyone
other than the publisher will be refused.
What would Lauren
like to read?
Prior to her sentencing,
Lauren compiled a list of books and other materials she'd like to read, but now that Lauren has started graduate school, the time she has to read for fun has all but disappeared. As such, Lauren has created a new book list made up of books that she needs for graduate school.

it.
Very Imporatnt! When sending Lauren a book, be sure to email her support committee at info@supportlauren.org and let them know so that they may cross the book(s) you sent off the list here. These books are for Lauren's graduate studies, and it is a waste for her to receive duplicates

MAKE
A DONATION!
Prisoners must purchase
nearly everything they will need from the prison commissary, from stamps
and pencils, to shampoo and bath towels, to extra clothing and food.
Commissary money is especially important for vegans, as much of their
prison diet comes from commissary purchases to supplement the lack of
vegan options provided by the prison. If you would like to make a donation
towards the SHAC 7 defendants' commissary, please send a check or money
order payable to "SHAC 7 Support Fund" to:
